Book Talk | Philipp Brandt | Inside Data Science: Hackers and the Making of a New Profession

Join the Institute for Public Knowledge and the AI in Society Working Group on Monday, November 2 (5:30-7:00 PM) for an event with Philipp Brandt. He will discuss his book, Inside Data Science: Hackers and the Making of a New Profession, with Alice E. Marwick.

Philipp Brandt is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Sciences Po Paris (France) and a researcher at the Centre de Sociologie des Organisations (CSO). He is the author of Inside Data Science: Hackers and the Making of a New Profession (Columbia University Press, 2026) and the Principal Investigator of the ReWORCS project, an ERC Starting Grant, studying nonstandard work trajectories across different organizational and institutional settings.

Alice E. Marwick is the Director of Research at Data and Society, Research Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, and a Senior Faculty Researcher at the Center for Information, Technology and Public Life, which she co-founded, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She researches the social, political, and cultural implications of popular technologies like social media and AI. Marwick is the author of The Private is Political: Networked Privacy on Social Media (Yale, 2023), Media Manipulation & Disinformation Online (Data & Society report, 2017), Status Update: Celebrity, Publicity and Branding in the Social Media Age (Yale, 2013), and co-editor of The Sage Handbook of Social Media (2017). She is working on a third book about fringe knowledge production, supported by a Carnegie Fellowship, and a project on AI-enabled scams, supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
