NYU’s Institute for Public Knowledge invites you to join us for a discussion of the Green New Deal, with Daniel Aldana Cohen, Rhiana Gunn-Wright, and Pavlina R. Tcherneva. The Green New Deal is a congressional resolution that lays out a plan for tackling climate change. Introduced by Democratic Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Senator Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts the proposal calls for “a new national, social, industrial, and economic mobilization on a scale not seen since World War II and the New Deal era.” The Green New Deal is also a symbol of something greater: A spirited attempt to rescue humanity from the perils of runaway climate change, and a plan to create a more just and equitable world.

Daniel Aldana Cohen is assistant professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he directs the Socio-Spatial Climate Collaborative, or (SC)2. In 2018-19, he is a Member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He works on climate change, inequality, urbanization, social movements, energy landscapes, and quantitative spatial analysis. He is presently co-editor of a special series on the Green New Deal for Jacobin. His research and writing have appeared in Nature, Public Culture, the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, The Guardian, The Nation, Jacobin, Dissent, and elsewhere.
Rhiana Gunn-Wright who some call “the architect of the Green New Deal,” is an organizer at New Consensus. She was previously the Policy Director for Abdul El-Sayed’s 2018 gubernatorial campaign. A 2013 Rhodes Scholar, Ms. Gunn-Wright has also worked as the policy analyst for the Detroit Health Department, the Mariam K. Chamberlain Fellow of Women and Public Policy at the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR), and as a policy intern in for former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Pavlina R. Tcherneva, Ph.D., is Associate Professor and Chair at the Department of Economics at Bard College and Research Associate at the Levy Economics Institute. She is a leading expert on the Job Guarantee and has developed a blueprint for implementation, which has informed the proposals of several members of Congress. Her current research examines the impact of direct job creation on growth, income inequality, and unemployment, and in particular on women and youth. Tcherneva consulted for Bernie Sanders’ 2016 U.S. Presidential campaign after her research on inequality had garnered national attention. She frequently speaks at Central Banks around the world and has worked with economists and policymakers from different countries on developing and evaluating direct job creation schemes. She has published numerous journal articles and book chapters and her 2004 book Full Employment and Price Stability: The Macroeconomic Vision of William S. Vickrey reinterprets the proposals of the late Nobel Prize-winning economist for the modern day.
