Island People: A Storm Relief Benefit and Celebration

NYU’s Institute for Public Knowledge, in collaboration with CARIBBEING, the Ace Hotel New York, and WORD Bookstores, invite you to join for the paperback release event for Joshua Jelly-Schapiro’s book, Island People: The Caribbean and the WorldThis masterwork of travel literature and history is a kaleidoscopic portrait of the Caribbean that illuminates its fierce grip on the world’s imagination. It shows how the region and its diverse peoples have helped shape the modern world—through politics, religion, economics, music, and culture.

In the spirit of the experimental re-mapping of the “Caribbean’s Far North” by Jelly-Schapiro and Rebecca Solnit for their prize-winning atlas, Nonstop Metropolis, this celebration positions New York as a Caribbean capital. All proceeds from ticket sales will go toward hurricane and tropical storm relief in the Caribbean, specifically Puerto Rico, Dominica, and the Virgin Islands.

Joshua Jelly-Schapiro is a geographer and writer whose work has appeared in The New YorkerThe New York Review of BooksNew YorkHarper’sThe BelieverArtforum, and The Nation, among many other publications. Currently a visiting scholar at the Institute for Public Knowledge at NYU, he is also the co-editor, with Rebecca Solnit, of Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas.
